question about Carla

page 56 book "All Clear"

Carla ( first line ), says: Finally! I´m so glad you called. Where were you?

They are talking in present, then....why Carla uses the "past simple" called?

Is it a subjuntive tense?
I understand the idea between them, but I dont know the gramatical tense.

A new word: Gather

Hi,

I'm going to share with you a new word that I have learned.

The word: Gather
The definition 1:

• To be together into one group,collection or place.
• To collect several things, often from different places or people.
• To accumulate (something) gradually.
  

The examples:

• The teacher gathered the students around the exhibit.
• The top of the bookshelf gathered dust.

Where I find the word: Reading the book: "The Testament"

All students in the English Department are encouraged to take advantage of the library’s ample selection of English language materials, including books, films, magazines, and newspapers.


Course Objectives:
• To enhance students’ abilities and confidence in all areas of English, with special emphasis on speaking and listening comprehension.
• To create a classroom environment in which students work independently, in pairs and in groups to practice and expand vocabulary, learn new expressions, improve grammar, pronunciation and general communication skills.
• To improve fluency when speaking about various topics.
• To improve ability to express opinions, ask questions, give advice, present arguments, etc.
• To enable students to participate in practical situations that will prepare them for future courses/ studies.
• To make language learning interesting, fun and rewarding.


Course Requirements and Evaluation:

Because this is mainly a conversation class, students will not be graded in the same manner as other English classes. The majority of the grade will be based on attendance and class participation (including group activities, role plays and drama, projects, presentations, pair work, etc.).

Part of this grade is also based on your vocabulary notebook, which must be kept up-to-date. There will be several quizzes as well as presentations and special projects that will be used to evaluate your progress in the class. You will also write a class diary that will help you keep track of what you learn in class. In addition, you are strongly encouraged to request a language exchange with a native speaker through the English Department office in order to practice conversation outside of class.
